Matatu Operators Rule Out Strike as Fuel Prices Push Fares Up

Matatu operators in Kenya have ruled out a fresh strike over rising fuel prices, saying they will continue operating despite higher costs following the latest Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) review.

Matatu Owners Association (MOA) president Albert Karakacha said on Sunday, October 18, that operators would remain on the road. However, the association has called for a 10% fare increase to help cushion transport businesses against rising operating costs.

“We will continue to do our business. We have no reason to say there is a problem. We are at work and we will continue to work,” he said.

The announcement follows EPRA’s latest fuel-price review, which took effect on October 15. In Nairobi, Super Petrol rose by KSh12.93 to KSh226.96 per litre, while diesel increased by KSh9.90 to KSh227.76. Kerosene recorded the biggest increase, rising by KSh28.49 to KSh219.87 per litre. The new prices remain in force until November 14.

Diesel is a major operating expense for many public service vehicles, meaning higher pump prices put additional pressure on operators already managing vehicle financing, maintenance, insurance and other daily costs.

For commuters, the concern is whether the higher costs will translate into more expensive daily travel. The MOA’s proposed 10% adjustment does not necessarily mean every route has adopted the same fare, so passengers should confirm current charges with their regular operators.

Karakacha has also criticised the government over commitments reportedly made during May’s talks with transport stakeholders in Mombasa, including proposals to support the transition to electric public service vehicles. The association says progress on those plans remains a concern.

For now, the immediate message for commuters is that a nationwide matatu shutdown is not planned by the MOA, but transport costs remain under pressure. Whether fares rise across individual routes will depend on how operators implement the proposed adjustment.
